Ryzek is a main antagonist in Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth.

Information[]

Ryzek Noavek is the older brother to Akos Kereseth (born Akos Noavek) and the adopted older brother to Cyra Noavek, and the son to Lazmet Noavek and Ylira Noavek. He was the former sovereign of the Shotet. His currentgift is to trade memories with people using intentional touch. He is 10 years older than Cyra.

Personality[]

Ryzek is very cruel, resorting often to torture and violence. He was trained this way by his father, Lazmet Noavek. He is a decent fighter, and his intention is as leader of the Shotet to reclaim the planet for their people. He is often paranoid, utilizing high levels of security for his private quarters. He is also afraid of pain, and is indicated to be somewhat weak of spirit; he is noted to take a calming tonic before every kill he orders. According to Cyra, he started out soft, then his father hardened him into a man that would torture and mutilate his younger sister.

Appearance[]

Ryzek is described as quite tall, with narrow shoulders and hips, almost like a regular-size man stretched tall and thin. He is pale compared to his sister, whom he does not closely resemble, and his voice is low and raspy, “as if he’d been screaming all night.” His arms are covered in kill marks, but most kills belong to men his father ordered killed. As a teenager he suffered from terrible acne.

Fate[]

"The first child of the family Noavek will fall to the family Benesit."

Ryzek spends most of the book attempting to avoid his fate, going so far as to outlaw knowledge or voicing of his fate in public, and kidnapping the future oracle of Thuvhe in order to manipulate his fate. Ryzek's fate is fulfilled in the second book after Isae Benesit administers a fatal stab wound in revenge for her sister, Orieve Benesit.

Currentgift[]

Ryzek's currentgift is to trade memories with others at will. The first time this is observed is with his younger sister, with whom he trades a memory of the first time his father instructed him to order someone's death. This is what triggered her currentgift.

Marks[]

Ryzek is noted to have killed very few (if any) people himself. He marks himself with those kills he has personally ordered, and his arm is noted to be covered with marks, although still not as many as Cyra.
